U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-4th) announced last week that Chicago’s Midway International Airport will receive $5.5 million in federal grant funding for taxiway and pavement improvements.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration awarded the grant on Sept. 16 through its Airport Improvement Program. The money will fund reconstruction and repairs to paved taxiways and pavements at the Southwest Side airport, which sits in García’s 4th Congressional District.
“Midway Airport is a major domestic travel hub for the Midwest and a source of employment for constituents in my district,” García said in a statement. “The funds from this grant will allow it to continue serving travelers safely and efficiently.”
García, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, said he worked to secure the funding.
It’s the second federal grant in a year Garcia has arranged to pay for safety improvements at the airport.
Last year, he secured a $35 million federal grant from the FAA for repairing and maintaining runways and taxiways to ensure the airport operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.
