The cyclist who died after being struck by a truck Sept. 14 in Garfield Ridge has been identified as 54-year-old Juan Martin Marquez Luna by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police said Luna was riding an e-bike about 5:15 a.m. in the 5600 block of South Archer Avenue when he was hit by a blue pickup truck after it hit a black sedan that was turning at the intersection.
Police said the pickup truck’s driver fled the scene. Video from the scene shows the badly damaged truck surrounded by police tape.
Luna was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Police are still looking for the pickup truck’s driver.
The intersection has a history of fatal accidents.
An 84-year-old woman was struck and killed at the same intersection 16 months ago.
According to Chicago police, Maria Ochoa Flores was on a walk when she was hit about 5:30 p.m. May 24 in the 5600 block of South Archer Avenue by a silver sedan that was going east on Archer when its driver tried to make a left turn and was struck by a gray sedan that was going west.
The silver sedan then flipped and hit Ochoa, a grandmother with 14 grandchildren.
