A Michigan City, Ind., man was charged Wednesday with attempted armed robbery after he was shot while allegedly attempting to rob a customer at gunpoint Tuesday morning at a Shell station at 151st Street and Harlem Avenue, Orland Park police said.
Christopher Brown, 20, was also charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon – under 21 and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon – Nn FOID card/no Conceal Carry License.
Police said security camera footage showed a man was pumping gas into his vehicle about 9 a.m. Sept. 15 when Brown, who was fully masked, approached and pointed a firearm at him, demanding property.
The victim, an Illinois Concealed Carry License holder, pulled a firearm from his rear waistband and fired, striking Brown once in the cheek, police said.
Brown ran in a southwestern direction from the parking lot, ultimately stopping in the parking lot where officers found him. The man who fired the handgun was not injured.
Police said a witness called 911 to report a male subject in the area of 15100 S. 73rd Ave. who had suffered a gunshot wound to the cheek. The man was identified as Christopher Brown.
The Orland Fire Protection District was immediately dispatched to that location to begin treatment and transported Brown to an area hospital, police said. He was reported in stable condition. Brown has remained under officers’ guard since the incident.
Investigators learned that the vehicle Brown drove to the gas station and the firearm he possessed were both reported stolen from Michigan City.
Investigators conducted more extensive interviews with parties involved, as well as numerous witnesses.
Police have not yet released a booking photo of Brown.
