Things are looking good for Millie.
The 154-year-old mill at 427 W. Corning Ave. made it through the unprecedented August storms with minimal damage, and Peotone Historical Society officials are grateful for that. They are even more grateful she’s getting so much support from the village.
“Although the recent storms didn’t do any major damage at the mill, it did knock over a sign and cover the ground with branches and debris,” PHS President Ed Nelson said.
“The torrential rains, coupled with the high winds, did take off some shingles and also really showed where we have leaks on the sides and roof of the mill and around the old windows. Working with the Village of Peotone–the historic structure is actually owned by the village–there are enough funds now to start making some repairs now, with the prospect of more money being directed towards the mill for bigger repairs in the future.”
These days, historical society officials are busy planning the 24th annual Old Mill Fall Festival on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. Until last year, the event was only one day but was extended to two days to give guests more opportunity to explore the mill, Nelson said.
The expansion was so well-received that PHS officials opted for an encore this year.
“Visitors are able to explore all 4 floors of the mill and even climb the stairs and view the gears in the 5th floor cap,” Nelson said.
“There isn’t any other time of the year that we get to share the splendor of the mill with so many people.”
Nelson said the fun begins on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., with the First Pour.
“(That’s) where we tap the kegs of Old Millie craft beer, along with other beverages sure to satisfy everyone,” he said.
“This year we’re also having multiple food vendors including Peotone’s own Firepit Bar and Grill, and D&E’s Corned Beef out of Oak Lawn. The owners are from Peotone. We’re excited for you to try their sandwiches and other delicious items.
“Then get ready for some live music under the big tent. Justin and John, Unplugged, will set the vibe. They play rock, pop, and all of your favorites. Following them will be our headliner, Rockaholics. The name gives it away – they play all the hits, from the ‘80s, ‘ 90s, and 2000s and more. We want to see everyone on the dance floor.
“On Sunday, Sept 20,” Nelson said, “the spotlight will be on the historic aspect of things. Corning Avenue will be closed down between Conrad Street and Mill Street, in front of the Peotone Mill. That’s where the craft vendors will be set up selling their handmade items, including jewelry, clothing, honey, breads, plants, A’s Are Us Model A Car Club, and the return of the extremely popular reptile tent.
“In the grassy yard will be the historical reenactors, including the always popular Cypress Camp Civil War reenactors, along with historians demonstrating old-time skills. Firepit Bar and Grill, and D&E’s Corned Beef will again serve food.
“New this year will be the opportunity for Sunday visitors to have some Old Millie Craft Beer along with other drinks to enjoy while they take in all there is to see.
“Another highlight of Sunday is our ever-popular bake sale where we sell wonderful home baked goods. It’s always one of our biggest fundraisers.”
Water balloon toss competitions will follow singing the national anthem, which was a big hit Also on Sunday the Mill will be open to tour from the bottom to top.
Peotone Historical Society / Millie merchandise will be available for purchase both days.
“The main goal for the Peotone Historical Society is to one day return Millie to her original splendor,” Nelson said.
“All funds collected on both days of the fest will go towards the Millie restoration project. To date, we’ve raised over $26,000 through fundraisers and sponsors.
