A man pumping gas Tuesday morning turned the tables on an armed man attempting a holdup by shooting the would-be robber in Orland Park.
Police said a man with a gun approached the victim at the Shell gas station at 151st Street and Harlem Avenue about 9 a.m. Sept. 15 and tried to rob him. The victim – a concealed carry license holder – reached into his waistband, pulled out his own firearm and shot the would-be robber.
The gunman was seen limping away and was later found nearby by Orland Park police. He was transported to an area hospital.
No charges were immediately filed.
Police said the shooter was cooperating with police and an investigation was underway.
Naseem Elmosa, whose family owns the business, told ABC7 news that the person appeared to be armed.
“He was masked. It was clear on plain view sight that this person, he was armed, of course,” Elmosa said.
According to Elmosa, surveillance footage from one of the station’s many security cameras show the masked person calmly approaching the customer before pulling out what appeared to be a handgun.
Within seconds, the customer reached behind his back, pulled a gun from his waistband, and fired at least two shots. The footage appears to show the masked person dropping a weapon before running away.
“I would hope that he would just give up his keys, let him take his car, and the guy wouldn’t have to use his weapon. Luckily, he had a weapon on him, and he wasn’t afraid to take it out,” Elmosa said.
“It’s just crazy to see here in Orland Park. It’s just scary for everybody around here, especially having a family-owned business. Never came across this issue before,” Elmosa told ABC7.
