Applications are now open for the sixth round of the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which offers tuition-free training and stipends to help workers enter construction and building trades.
The program, launched in 2021, aims to diversify the construction industry by expanding access to apprenticeships by providing $25 million in funding to support up to 45 programs statewide, serving nearly 2,000 residents, with priority given to underrepresented groups including people of color, veterans, and women in this round.
State Senator Mike Porfirio, whose 11th District includes Garfield Ridge, Clearing, Burbank and Lyons Township, is encouraging local organizations to apply.
“Opportunities like the Illinois Works Pre Apprenticeship Program are Illinois government at its best,” Porfirio said. “This funding will directly empower hard workers across our state with knowledge, experience and personal growth that will put them on a path of success for the future.”
The Illinois Works Jobs Program Act that became law in 2019 is designed to promote diversity, inclusion and use of apprentices in state-funded capital projects.
The Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, the Illinois Works Apprenticeship Initiative, and the Illinois Works Bid Credit Program were all created by the Act.
Together the goal of all three programs is to create an accomplished pool of skilled, diverse candidates to fill new job opportunities created by the $45 billion Rebuild Illinois capital plan.
Since its inception, Illinois Works has awarded over $70 million to community-based organizations and serves more than 7,000 residents.
Participants attend tuition-free, receive a stipend including access supportive services to help them enter the construction industry. Upon completion, pre-apprentices earn industry recognized certifications qualifying participants for registered apprenticeship programs, according to a Sept. 3 press release by Governor J.B. Pritzker’s office.
Eligible applicants include nonprofits and community-based organizations such as industry associations, chambers of commerce, local workforce areas, community colleges, technical schools, and school districts.
New and experienced providers can apply including existing grantees proposing to serve a different geographic area. Grants range from $150,000 to $550,000.
Applications are due by October 2, 2026, at 5 p.m. Interested organizations can visit the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity website to access the Notice of Funding Opportunity and apply.
