The I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor Civic Center Authority will host a free, family-friendly history celebration Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Justice Park District, featuring historical re-enactors portraying George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other American figures.
“Crossroads of America,” running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 7747 Oak Grove Avenue in Justice, marks the nation’s 250th birthday with interactive activities, live music, and exhibits from local historical societies.
The event replaces the annual River Thru History Rendezvous, which was not held last year. Re-enactors will portray figures including Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Henry Ford, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Rosie the Riveter.
Children can participate in colonial crafts, a trading post, and old-fashioned games. The Theatiki Fife & Drum and the band Trillium will perform. Food is available for purchase; admission is free, though donations to the Civic Center Authority are accepted.
Parking is available on neighboring streets or via shuttle from Brodnicki School parking lot, one block away.
Tabatha Sutera, a board member of both the Justice Park District and the I&M Canal Civic Center Authority, said the event offers residents a chance to celebrate local and national history.
“There will be so many things for people of all ages to enjoy from hearing local history, seeing re-enactments, enjoy live bands and close out the summer with something memorable while celebrating our history,” Sutera said.
The event is sponsored by the Illinois & Michigan Canal Civic Center Authority, Justice Park District, the Township of Lyons, the Village of Willow Springs, and the Village of Bridgeview.
