As a football purist, coach Bob Organ isn’t necessarily a fan of the expansion of the IHSA playoff field from 256 to 384.
“I’m old school,” he said. “The beautiful thing with football is you’ve got to qualify. You still have to qualify … but I liked the old system. … It’s a prestigious thing to get to the playoffs and I hope it stays that way.”
That said, Organ knows the change could offer some hope to the Mustangs, whose only postseason appearance in program history came as Morton West in 1983.
Matthew Wheeler (5-9,165), a senior receiver/defensive back, heads into his third year as a starter and will set the tone for the Mustangs.
Other players to watch include senior quarterback Michael Arizaga (6-0, 190), junior receiver Isaiah Cox (5-9, 150), junior center Kaeden Ortega (5-6, 255) and senior receiver/defensive back Jonathan Solis (6-0, 170).
