The Brookfield Village Board voted to place the beautification commission in dormancy, according to an ordinance passed as part of the omnibus agenda at its latest meeting.

Village Manager Tim Wiberg said on Aug. 17 that the move reflects the village’s shift to handling beautification needs through the public works department.

“Back in the day, the commission did a lot of things our public works department wasn’t doing, things like maintenance of parks. They were kind of taking control of that,” Wiberg said.

“Over the years, we’ve done a better job with our public works department to maintain things in a more timely fashion. So a lot of the things the commission was in charge of doing are no longer needed.”

The commission itself recommended the dormancy, Wiberg noted. Dormancy does not disband the commission; it simply suspends meetings until the village determines there is a need to revive it.

“The commission didn’t feel the need to meet regularly,” Wiberg added.

The board voted in favor of dormancy at its Aug. 10 meeting.
