Summit’s Old Timers Picnic marks 50 years with community celebration

The Old Timers Picnic reaches a milestone this year as it celebrates its 50th anniversary on August 22 at Argo Park in Summit.

The event, held the fourth Saturday of August, runs from noon to 6 p.m. at the park, located at 74th and 64th Avenues behind Wharton School. All are welcome for food, activities, and games.

The picnic began in 1974, started by the Old Timers Softball Club, which itself dates to the 1950s. Dave Shannon, the only original member and past president, said the club emerged from neighborhood ties.

“Back then, most everybody worked at Corn Products and the neighborhood team got started to get out and play,” Shannon said. “As team members got older, it was decided to have the Old Timers Picnic, which is a picnic for the entire community to attend.”

The event paused for a couple of years during the Covid pandemic but has since resumed.

Shannon said the picnic has evolved into a community gathering centered on families and children.

“It’s a great way for everyone in the community to get together, enjoy food, ice cream, and have fun,” he said. “It’s mainly a picnic for the kids. It’s a great back to school event for them to enjoy and play games.”

The not-for-profit club is currently led by President Tony Davis and Vice President Paul Sawyer.

Sawyer said the 50th anniversary comes at an opportune time, as Argo Park has recently undergone renovations. The improvements include a new mural, a newly painted basketball court, a freshly painted pavilion, and benches throughout the park—work completed by Nubian 9 (N9), and other community organizations.

“It’s exciting being the 50th and having all of the families that come back to town for the picnic,” Sawyer said. “We are excited to have this milestone picnic at Argo Park, which was recently revamped.”
