Eggs tossed at car on Ashland
An officer responded to a report that a car had been egged while driving in the 5700 block of Ashland Avenue at 1:42 a.m. Aug. 1.
Graffiti found on fence
An officer on patrol found white spray-paint graffiti on a fence near Dumpsters in the 9900 block of West 58th Street at 9:20 a.m. Aug. 1.
Underage male tries to buy liquor
A male who appeared to be underage tried to buy liquor at the BP gas station, 5330 S. La Grange Road, at 1:43 p.m. Aug. 1.
When the clerk asked for ID, the male became irate, grabbed a bottle of soda, and threw it at the window before leaving.
Customer tosses drink at employee
An argument broke out at 8 p.m. Aug. 1 after an employee at Wendy’s, 9941 W. 55th St., asked a customer to stop using a vape pen in the restaurant.
The customer threw a full soft drink at the employee, striking them. The customer and his friends then left in a vehicle.
The offender was described as wearing a blue sweatshirt. Officers are following up on leads.
Woman’s wallet stolen in grocery store
A woman reported at 2:02 p.m. Aug. 2 that her wallet was missing from her purse while she was shopping at Jewel, 5545 S. Brainard Ave. She believes it was taken while her cart was unattended.
Someone made several unauthorized charges at Marshalls and TJ Maxx immediately after.
Check altered
A resident reported on Aug. 3 that the name and amount on a check mailed at the La Grange Post Office between May 1 and May 7 had been altered.
Truck knocks over light pole
Staff at Countryside Veterinary Center, 9823 W. 55th St., reported at 7:10 a.m. Aug. 4 that a light pole had been knocked down.
Video surveillance showed a large white truck entering the lot around 5 a.m., followed by a loud bang and the truck leaving.
Tires stolen from Discount Tire
A man was charged with theft after removing tires without permission from a used tire box at Discount Tire, 5505 S. La Grange Road, at 12:45 p.m. Aug. 4. Police did not release his name.
Vehicle damaged in hit-and-run
A car owner reported that 30 minutes after parking in the lot on the east side of Andy’s Frozen Custard, 5745 S. La Grange Road, they found a scratch and scuff mark on their vehicle, apparently from another vehicle.
Identity theft reported
A Countryside resident reported on Aug. 6 that someone had opened a Verizon account using their personal information sometime in 2024.
Hit-and-run at gas station
A caller reported at 7:50 a.m. Aug. 7 that their vehicle was struck in the parking lot of Shell/Circle K, 6101 S. La Grange Road.
After speaking with police, both drivers waited in their vehicles for officers to arrive. The driver of the offending vehicle then fled and was involved in another accident that rendered the vehicle immobile.
The initial caller declined to sign a complaint for the hit-and-run, but the offending driver was issued citations for the second accident.
Retail theft at Home Depot
Jan M. Sularz, 73, of Bridgeview, was charged with retail theft at Home Depot at 11:40 a.m. Aug. 1.
A loss prevention employee saw him conceal $229 worth of items under his jacket and leave without paying. When confronted, he fled on foot. Officers apprehended him after he discarded some clothing near his vehicle.
Officers recovered the clothing and stolen merchandise in a nearby bush.
Theft leads to other charges
Daniel J. Russell, 56, of Hodgkins, was charged with multiple violations at 5:16 p.m. Aug. 1 after a loss prevention employee saw him take plants from Home Depot, 140 Countryside Plaza, and leave in his vehicle.
Officers stopped Russell nearby and recovered merchandise valued at $260. During the stop, they discovered his license was revoked and he had no insurance. He was charged accordingly and given a court date.
Drunken driving charge for Countryside man
Mark A. Huebner, 28, of Countryside, was charged with driving under the influence at 8:40 p.m. Aug. 1 in the 5500 block of La Grange Road.
Officers conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle saw Huebner’s vehicle cross the center line and nearly strike a squad car. An officer followed and observed Huebner disobey a traffic control device. Once stopped, officers noted signs of impairment.
Huebner failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. His breath sample registered a 0.293 BAC. The legal limit is 0.08.
Drunken driving charge in hit-and-run
Jaime Rivera, 43, of Chicago, was driving southbound on La Grange Road at 8:50 a.m. Aug. 7 when he made an illegal U-turn and hit another vehicle on 58th Street.
Rivera then fled eastbound on 58th Street and was involved in another accident at 58th and East Avenue in McCook.
Rivera showed signs of impairment and was arrested for driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and disobeying a stop sign.
