Brookfield’s finance department has earned the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fifth consecutive year, a recognition of the village’s financial management standards.
Village Manager Tim Wiberg called the award “a real privilege” and noted that not all communities that receive the GFOA’s comprehensive annual financial report award also earn the budget award.
“It’s the highest award you can get in government financial budgeting,” Wiberg said at the Aug. 10 board meeting.
Wiberg credited the collaborative effort across all departments, though he singled out Finance Director Doug Cooper, who was not at the meeting.
“While he’s the architect of the budget process, it really is all departments and all department heads who chip in,” Wiberg said. “It only comes as a result of the department heads’ work and analysis, and ultimately the village board, which approves the budget.”
President Michael Garvey echoed the recognition, noting that accurate financial reporting underpins nearly every board decision.
“Almost every decision we make depends on accurate and timely financial reports,” he said.
