Academic achievement, community involvement and a commitment to higher education earned Abby Winter recognition from the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police this year.
Winter, the daughter of Palos Park Police Officer John Winter, was among several students selected to receive a $500 scholarship through the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police’s annual dependent college scholarship program.
The scholarship recognizes current college students who are dependents of active police officers or support staff serving at law enforcement agencies whose chiefs are members of the association. Recipients are selected based on criteria that include academic commitment and community service.
Palos Park Police Chief Joe Miller congratulated Winter on behalf of the department, recognizing her academic accomplishments and dedication to continuing her education.
Officer John Winter has served the Palos Park Police Department for many years and currently serves as a field training officer, helping prepare and mentor new officers entering the department.
Deputy Chief Chris Hughes, who nominated Winter for the scholarship, said the award reflects not only a student’s hard work but also the support of the people around them.
“We realize that behind every student is a network of support, and this program recognizes both the hard work and dedication of young scholars like Abby and the families who have helped guide them,” Hughes said.
The department also thanked the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police for continuing to invest in the education of law enforcement families.
Police Commissioner Dan Polk said the scholarship program benefits both students and the communities they will one day serve.
“The South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police (SSACOP) program not only honors the families of law enforcement officers but helps invest in the future of our communities,” Polk said.
The scholarship will help support Winter’s educational pursuits during the upcoming academic year as she continues her college studies.
Each year, the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police awards dependent college scholarships to eligible students whose parents serve in law enforcement agencies affiliated with the organization, recognizing academic excellence and encouraging continued educational success.
