If you want to celebrate something that comes along once every 100 years, keep the evening of Sept. 19 open.
That’s when the village of McCook will celebrate its centennial at the park district, 4911 Riverside Ave.
Mayor Terrance Carr and Village Clerk Ken Lyons confirmed the Sept. 19 party after a five-minute village board meeting on July 20.
Five minutes for a board meeting is fast, even by McCook standards. The centennial celebration will demand considerably more planning.
“September 19. Write that date down. It’s going to be big. Huge,” Carr said.
While details are still being finalized, the centennial bash will run from 6 p.m. to midnight, with fireworks at 9 p.m., Carr said.
The timing will make for a busy day: the annual village picnic is scheduled at the park district that afternoon.
Lyons said he’s been working on the village’s next newsletter, which he hopes to release by Sept. 1. It will include centennial information. “I’ve seen the cover. It looks good,” he said.
Carr also reminded those at the July 20 board meeting that the next meeting—set for 6 p.m. Aug. 3—will again feature food trucks from Joey’s Red Hots: one with standard fast food, the other with gelato. All food is free.
