Several changes will be coming soon to Palos Heights businesses, following a series of approval granted at the City Council meeting on July 7.
Two established businesses within the community are relocating on Harlem Avenue in order to expand into larger spaces.
Van Gogh Salon & Spa, which is currently located at 12341 S. Harlem Avenue, will be relocating to 12250 S. Harlem, in the storefront next door to Doughs Guys Bakery.
The special use permit was granted unanimously, and salon owner Amy Redden stated that she hopes to make the move in October.
“We still have a lot of work to do because the space wasn’t a salon, so we’re waiting on building permits now,” Redden said. “But we’re hoping for October.”
During the meeting, the issue was also raised about what the salon planned to do with the patio space on the south side of the building, and if it could be used by the public.
Redden said that is exactly her plan.
“I want to make that cute little patio a community space,” she said. “We’re going to make it really nice with flowers and lights so people can have some place to sit if they get something to eat at the bakery or the tamale shop. I want to help make the town more walkable and family friendly. I’m excited for it.”
Redden said the bigger space could also allow the business to expand and offer more services than its current hair and nails options, but those plans have not been finalized.
Joining Van Gogh on the west side of Harlem will be Arctic Training Center, which is currently located at 7214 College Drive.
The martial arts gym will be moving into a larger space at 12330 S. Harlem next to the Advocate Christ Hearing and Sleep Center facilities.
Finally, a third Palos Heights business, SNK Fuels, 12100 S. Ridgeland Avenue, was granted a Class H liquor license by the City Council.
Although Alderman Jack Clifford expressed some worries about “mixing alcohol with cars,” the gas station’s limited hours, which would prevent it from selling anything past midnight, limited concern.
The ordinance for the liquor license was approved unanimously.

Westgate Music School is also moving to Harlem Ave.
Westgate has been at 6527 W. 127th just down from Aurelios for 10 years.
They will be moving above the dentist’s office at 122nd and Harlem in August.
We’re looking forward to our new home!
