Nearly 60 people gathered at the Lyons Township Community Room Thursday, July 9, for ice cream, popcorn, and conversation.

The second annual Ice Cream Social, held from 2:30 to 4 p.m., brought together residents of all ages for an afternoon of music and community connection on a warm day.

Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg, who organizes the event, said it reflects the township’s values.

“This is the community event of the year,” Hoffenberg said. “I love bringing everybody together. The community comes out and enjoys ice cream together and connects with others. We have ice cream and popcorn—it’s just a bit of Americana and reminds us all that this is a little bit of Mayberry in our own backyard.”

Hoffenberg added that local gatherings reveal common ground. “We sometimes seem like such a divided country, but when you get down on the local level, we agree on almost everything, including our love of ice cream.”

Alice Vilimek of Bridgeview said she attends multiple township events. “It’s nice that they do this,” Vilimek said. “I’ve come to the Valentine’s Day luncheon and plan on coming to more events here. They are doing one soon on computer skills. I have a new computer and am looking forward to that one.”

The Township Clerk’s Office hosts community events throughout the year. An upcoming “How to Email” computer skills workshop is scheduled for July 13 from 11 a.m. to noon. Other programs include Crafternoon, Repair Cafe, Game Day, and Tea Party. For details, visit www.lyonstownshipil.gov.
