The Township of Lyons Clerk’s Office is offering a free STEM camp next month for students entering grades 5 through 9, marking the third consecutive year of the program.
The camp runs August 10–14 from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday at the township offices, 6404 Joliet Road, Countryside. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The program is led by high school and college interns from Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg’s Summer Incubator Internship program. Lead interns are Justin Cabana, a recent Lyons Township High School graduate, and Elle St. Arnaud, who just completed her freshman year at Boston University.
Students will participate in activities including Martian Rover construction, coding basics using Scratch, science experiments, a debate on artificial intelligence, a beginner economics lab, and an interactive investment challenge. The week concludes Friday with a showcase where parents and guardians can view their child’s projects.
Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop.
Hoffenberg said the camp offers benefits beyond academics.
“Offering a free STEM Camp led by our Leadership Interns does so much more than teach science and technology,” she said. “It gives young people a chance to stay engaged, continue learning over the summer, spend time away from screens, make new friends, and discover talents they may not have known they had.”
For parents, she said, the camp provides “peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are in a safe, enriching environment.” For interns, it offers leadership development. “And for our entire community, it’s another example of what happens when we invest in people instead of problems,” Hoffenberg added.
