Dangerously hot conditions are expected to grip southwest Cook County through Wednesday evening, with heat index values around 105 degrees forecast for each afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday and covers all of southern Cook County including Oak Lawn, Orland Park and Bridgeview.
Temperatures in the mid to upper 90s combined with high humidity will create hazardous conditions, particularly for elderly residents and those with pre-existing health conditions, the National Weather Service said. Peak heat indices could reach near 110 degrees Tuesday.
Cook County’s Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security has activated cooling centers across the region for residents without air conditioning. The full list of suburban cooling center locations and hours is available at cookcountyil.gov/service/cooling-centers. Residents should contact their nearest center first to verify availability and hours of operation.
County officials urge residents to take precautions: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, stay out of the sun and check on elderly neighbors and those with functional needs. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
