A 36-year-old man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence after he struck a Willow Springs squad car during a traffic stop on La Grange Road.
An officer had pulled over a speeding vehicle on southbound La Grange Road when a black Chevy Traverse hit the driver’s door and side-view mirror of the squad car.
The driver pulled over briefly to check damage to his own vehicle, then headed toward the southbound I-294 ramp without stopping.
The officer pursued and pulled over the Traverse on I-294 near 84th Street.
Police found several open and empty cans of Modelo beer inside the vehicle. The driver told the officer he had consumed only one beer that day and the other empty cans were from the previous day.
He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to yield or reduce speed when approaching an emergency vehicle, and illegal transportation of alcohol.
