The Village of Manhattan took time during its June 16 board meeting to honor the Lincoln-Way West High School girls’ softball team, which achieved a historic first-time win at the state conference.

“The 2026 Lincoln-Way West softball team completed the most successful season in the school’s 17-year history, finishing with an impressive 30 and seven record and capturing the IHSA Class 4A state championship,” Mayor Mike Adrieansen said.

He highlighted the seven seniors on the team who helped lead the team to success: Abby Brueggmann, Reese Cusack, Molly Finn, Reese Forsythe, Jessica Noga, Reese Rourke and Paige Seivert. He also acknowledged the Varsity Coach Heather Novak, Athletic Director Mike Villa, and founding Athletic Director and Principal Dr. Ted Robbins, who retired at the end of the year.

“The Warriors thrived on exceptional team chemistry, a deep understanding of the game, and the ability to deliver in crucial moments. Their remarkable achievements have secured a lasting place in Leagueway West athletic history,” Adrieansen read.

The girls on the team, along with the coach, were each given plaques donated by the village’s law firm, Spesia and Taylor.

“They were just incredible. Their ability to execute and their teamwork, just their focus. They were just so impressive all throughout the postseason. Then the overwhelming support we have had from the community has definitely been felt and appreciated,” Novak said.

During trustee comments, Trustee Justin Young took a moment to address the girls’ win.

“What they did was absolutely extraordinary. As a dad who coaches softball and has a daughter who plays softball, I know many of those girls on that team, and they’ve always been really good role models to the younger girls,” Young said.

The other trustees also offered their congratulations and acknowledgement.

“I was super proud of those girls, and it was so exciting,” Trustee Lucinda Neighbors added.

The board also awarded the bid for the MFT project to resurface roads within the Estates of Leighlinbridge subdivision to Austin Tyler of Elwood for $883,978, who was the lowest bidder.

Additionally, the village approved the special permitting for the mural that was brought forth at the last meeting. Some slight adjustments were made by the plan commission, including moving the lettering on top of the American flag to the bottom of the mural. It is anticipated the mural will be ready mid-July.
