Cheryl Hansen, who spent decades in the fire service and emergency medical services across three fire departments and served as a fire commissioner with Tri-State Fire Protection District, died May 29 surrounded by family and friends. She was 71.
Ms. Hansen, nee Checker, devoted her career to emergency response and patient care. She began as a firefighter-paramedic with Clarendon Heights Fire Protection District, then moved to Tri-State FPD as a paramedic and EMS coordinator before joining Plainfield FPD in the same role. She returned to Tri-State FPD as a fire commissioner, a position she held until her death following a brief illness.
Beyond the firehouse, Ms. Hansen was known for her commitment to animal rescue. She fostered numerous pets over the years, helping them find permanent homes — often with her and her husband, Mark.
She was an avid gardener who took pride in her plants and seasonal floral displays. She and Mr. Hansen shared a passion for golf and spent time refining their skills on the course together.
“She was a true caregiver,” the funeral home noted, “always making sure everyone around her was cared for, supported, and loved.”
Ms. Hansen is survived by her husband and two dogs, Budz and Ashley. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Checker, and her in-laws, Harvey and Shirley Hansen.
A memorial visitation was held Saturday, June 6, at Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Ave., Darien. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Find A Home Pet Rescue Inc., 4311 Ariel Court, Naperville, IL 60564.
