Orland Park’s village board unanimously rejected a proposal to build a half-court basketball court at Eagle Ridge III Park on Tuesday, after nearly 200 residents overwhelmingly opposed the idea.

The park department had mailed 300 postcards to neighbors asking for input. Of those who responded, 62 percent opposed the court and 38 percent supported it.

Residents said Eagle Ridge is a passive park designed for walking, young children, and quiet enjoyment. A basketball court, they argued, would bring constant noise from the ball and players.

“Feedback from our residents is one of the best ways we can make our decisions,” Trustee Joanna Leafblad said.

Trustee Bill Healy added: “We listened to our residents as we should. By listening to them, they feel included in the process.” [Edited for clarity and conciseness]

Eagle Ridge III is one of 66 parks the village operates.

  1. That’s all joyful noise….. What’s the big deal about hoops at the park? How is it different than a baseball field or football field?

    1. You are wrong. They bring hoodlums and trouble.Look around. You must bot go out much

  2. We do not need any more new construction in our parks. Maintain what we have. Im retired and parks hardly ever have kids playing at park. They’d rather be inside. They should build a teen center in Centennial Park where they have socials at night for kids .
