Maria Ligas, a Polish-born homemaker and caregiver whose devotion to her Catholic faith and family defined her life, died May 28 in Justice, Illinois. She was 76.
The cause was not specified.
Mrs. Ligas was born Aug. 7, 1949, in Rogoźnik, Poland, to Andrzej and Aniela Bobek. Before immigrating to the United States in 2001, she worked on her family farm in Stare Bystre and in the pediatric and infectious diseases ward at a hospital in Nowy Targ. In America, she worked at a nursing home until her retirement.
She was married to Franciszek Ligas. Her children are Marek Ligas and his wife, Ania; Agata Nowak and her husband, Robert; Maria “Majka” Kois and her husband, Zbigniew; and Paweł Ligas.
She had six grandchildren: Izabella, Wioletta, and Sebastian Ligas; Kinga and Karol Nowak; and Vincent Kois.
She is survived by her brothers Władysław, Andrzej, and Adam Bobek. She was preceded in death by her brothers Stanisław and Jan Bobek.
Mrs. Ligas was a member of Saint Fabian Church in Bridgeview, Illinois, and held a special devotion to Our Lady of Ludźmierz and Saint Pope John Paul II.
Visitation is Sunday, May 31, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 S. 88th Ave., Justice. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 1, at noon at Saint Fabian Church, 7450 W. 83rd St., Bridgeview. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.
