John S. Mondzyk Jr., known to many as Moon or Johnny Boy, a carpenter who was a longtime member of Carpenters Local 54 and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died May 19 in Frankfort. He was 70.
He died after a battle with cancer, according to his obituary.
Mondzyk was born Oct. 1, 1955, in Chicago. He spent most of his life working as a carpenter and took pride in his craft. He was a longtime member of Carpenters Local 54, where he built friendships that lasted a lifetime.
He was married to Loretta Mondzyk and was the father of Amber Rae Dzimira. He had two grandchildren, Riley and Nathan.
He is also survived by his brother Darryl and sister-in-law Karen, and by many nieces and nephews.
Mondzyk enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, gambling, and music. He was known for his loyalty, his willingness to help others without hesitation, and his sense of humor—particularly his habit of teasing his wife, which friends and family understood as his way of showing affection.
Visitation is Tuesday, May 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 S. 88th Ave., Justice.
A service and time of remembrance will be held Wednesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
