Dinosaur fossils took over Summit Public Library on Wednesday, June 24, as part of the library’s Children’s Summer Reading Program, which runs through July 23.

The traveling exhibit, called T-REXPLORERS: Walk The Earth, See What You’ll Find, features authentic dinosaur fossils and stories from archaeological digs. It’s one of several events designed to draw kids to the library and encourage summer reading.

“Children got to explore dinosaur fossils, which is always a hit with them,” said Olivia Morgucz, Youth Services Coordinator.

The program kicked off June 11 with an Ice Cream Social. Participants read age-appropriate books—easy readers for younger children, chapter books for older ones—and submit reports as they progress. The library tracks their reading and rewards participants with prizes. Readers will be recognized at a closing party July 23 at Haunted Trails in Burbank, where participants receive t-shirts.

Other summer events include:

• Meet The Author: Children’s book author and illustrator Laura Smetana, July 8 at 3 p.m.

• Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles, July 16 at 5 p.m.

• Chicago Bubble Show, July 20 at 4 p.m., featuring interactive bubble performances.

“Everyone is welcome to the events that happen during the Children’s Summer Reading Program,” Morgucz said.
