Citizen helps nab suspected drunken driver

Police at 1:05 p.m. April 30 received a 911 call from a citizen reporting a suspected drunken driver in the area of 55th Street and La Grange Road, police said.

The caller followed the vehicle until it stopped near 55th Street and Spring Avenue, police said.

When an officer observed the suspect exit the driver’s seat, the man appeared visibly intoxicated, police said.

When officers attempted to stop him, he refused to follow commands, aggressively approached them, and resisted arrest, police said.

Jose M. Zavala-Vieyra, 37, of Oak Lawn, has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting/obstructing an officer, police said.

Soliciting without a permit

A 22-year-old Minnesota man was charged with soliciting without a permit after police received a complaint from a resident near 67th Street and Dawn Avenue at 6:10 p.m. April 24, police said.

Graffiti suspect caught on video

Officers received a report April 25 that graffiti had been drawn on park equipment and a gazebo support beam at Countryside Park, police said.

Video surveillance showed a dark-haired man wearing a light-colored t-shirt and black pants drawing the graffiti shortly after midnight on April 24, police said. No arrest has been made.

Four juveniles enter building, cars

Four juvenile offenders entered a vacant building and two unlocked parked cars in the 5500 block of East Avenue around 4 p.m. April 25, police said.

When an officer interrupted them, they fled on foot through back yards in the 9700 block of 56th Street. Police have not reported any arrests.

If apprehended, they may be charged with criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, police said.

Attempted identity theft to buy vehicle

An unknown offender contacted Autobarn Volkswagen, 6161 S. Joliet Road, on April 28 and attempted to purchase a vehicle using an unsuspecting victim’s personal information, police said.

Dealership staff confirmed with the victim that no purchase was authorized. No arrest has been reported.

Gun and blood pressure machine stolen

A resident reported April 28 that a revolver and blood pressure machine had been stolen from their home in the 5300 block of 7th Avenue, police said. No suspects have been identified.

Hit and run outside Home Depot

A parked, unoccupied car was struck by another vehicle in the Home Depot parking lot, 140 Countryside Plaza, at 3:23 p.m. April 28, police said.

A witness reported the striking vehicle was a white SUV. Police have not recovered the vehicle or identified a suspect.

Stolen car hit bus, flees police

Officers on patrol at 8:36 a.m. May 1 in the 9800 block of Joliet Road spotted a vehicle reported stolen.

When a marked police car pursued it, the driver fled at high speed, striking the rear of an empty bus. The vehicle fled north on Interstate 55 from La Grange Road and has not been apprehended by police.

Property damage charged

Michael A. Jacobs, 51, town not released, was arrested after a disturbance inside a business in the 9900 block of West 55th Street at 3 p.m. April 24, police said.

During the arrest, officers identified Jacobs as wanted for a criminal damage to property incident in December 2024. He was charged accordingly, police said.
