Police officers traded patrol cars for rooftop duty Friday morning as the Palos Park Police Department brought back its annual Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser at Dunkin’ Donuts in support of Special Olympics Illinois.

Drivers passing the Dunkin’ at 13029 S. La Grange Road slowed down to wave and honk at officers camped out above the restaurant, while customers stopped in for coffee, donuts and a chance to donate to the cause.

Perched on the roof were Palos Park Community Service Officers Niko Doore and Grace Mischak, who spent the morning waving to motorists and encouraging donations for Special Olympics Illinois.

Palos Park police officers took to the Dunkin’ rooftop Friday, raising money and connecting with residents for Special Olympics Illinois.

The event, held from 5 a.m. to noon, also served as this month’s “Coffee With the Chief,” giving residents an opportunity to sit down with Police Chief Joe Miller and talk about community concerns, policing and everyday life in Palos Park.

Inside the shop and out in the parking lot, officers greeted customers, collected donations and thanked supporters throughout the morning.

“This is a good community event and gives us the chance to meet and greet and interact with the community,” Palos Park Police Officer Bob Kotsianis said.

People who donated received a coupon for a free donut, while those who gave $10 or more also received a tumbler and a coupon for a free medium hot or iced coffee.

The fundraiser benefited Special Olympics Illinois through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a statewide effort supported by police departments across Illinois.

Palos Park officers also sold limited-edition department challenge coins during the event. The coins, priced at $20 each, were created specifically to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, and only 200 were made.

The rooftop fundraiser has become a familiar sight each spring, mixing a lighthearted atmosphere with a cause that carries deep meaning for many officers and community members alike.

This year marked the 23rd anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run partnership in Illinois, which has raised more than $11.1 million for Special Olympics Illinois programs over the years.
