Dozens of residents lined up Saturday, May 2, at the Township of Lyons to safely destroy sensitive documents, part of a multi-date program designed to reduce identity theft risk.
The shred event at 6404 Joliet Road in Countryside ran from 8 a.m. to noon with a steady stream of vehicles throughout the morning. Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg’s office hosts the program four times a year to give residents a secure way to dispose of documents they no longer need.
“We had cars lined up waiting for it to start,” Deputy Clerk George Pach said.
Each vehicle can drop off up to four boxes of documents. The township contracts with a shredding company to destroy the materials on-site, ensuring sensitive information cannot be recovered.
The next shred event takes place June 13 at the Village of Bridgeview from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the truck is full.
After that, the program returns to the township complex in Countryside on October 3, then moves to the Bridgeview Park District, 8100 S. Beloit, on November 7.
