Oak Lawn graduate Davion Lawrence is filling the stat sheet this season for St. Xavier.

He entered this week leading the Cougars in scoring (14.9 points per game), 3-pointers made (45) and steals (27).

He is also second in rebounding (4.5 per game) and third in assists (26).

While he is happy he can help the Cougars out in so many different ways, there is one stat that he hopes can change soon: the team’s won-loss record.

Through 21 games, the Cougars are 8-13 with six regular-season games left and are in jeopardy of experiencing their first losing season since 2018-19’s 10-20 mark.

Six of the 13 losses were by six points or less and the Cougars suffered a nine-point overtime defeat to neighbor Trinity Christian.

“It’s been tough to watch a few baskets go in and out, but we stay together,” Lawrence said. “We’re way better than our record, honestly. It’s just the little things. We have to fix those.

“The best thing is that even though our record is what it is, we don’t point fingers.”

After college, the sports nutrition and medicine major would like to open up a fitness facility. When he was in high school, he lost 45 pounds between his junior and senior year and kept it off four years later as he is listed at 6-foot-6, 230 pounds.

He said that eating and exercise discipline is the key.

“Motivation and discipline are two different things,” he said. “You could be motivated, but you have to be disciplined to be able to do it.”
