Book lovers headed over to Bookie’s, an independent bookstore and community staple on the Southwest Side for 36 years, on Nov. 29, for Small Business Saturday. Local creators Olivia DeSmit and Andy Vanderbilt greeted fans and signed copies of their newest books.
DeSmit, a children’s author from Evergreen Park, signed copies of Edwin’s Perfect Gift, a heartwarming story perfect for reading aloud to young readers. Vanderbilt, an illustrator and writer of Chicago, signed his action-packed new book, Adventure Ace: Valley of the Giant Snakes, appealing to children eager for adventure.
The event kicked off around noon, and attendees enjoyed meeting the authors, getting books signed and supporting local businesses. Bookie’s, located at 10324 S. Western Ave. and owned by Keith Lewis of Beverly, has been a beloved South Side destination for more than three decades. The store offers a wide selection of new and used books, from current bestsellers to hard-to-find treasures, along with gifts, stationery, and a welcoming space for readers of all ages.
Lewis said, Small Business Saturday is all about community.
Attendees left with signed books, smiles, and a reminder of the joy of shopping local this holiday season.
