The annual picnic at Rhine VFW Post 2729 was held Sunday, Aug. 31, from noon to 4 p.m. at the post, 5858 S. Archer Ave.
The smell of roasted corn drifted onto Archer Avenue, continuing a tradition that is always a big hit. Once again, Berwyn Fruit Market donated fresh ears of sweet corn and watermelon.
Hot dogs and hamburgers were served as the main course. Children and adults lined up for cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn donated by locally owned Marszalik and Sons Heating and Air Conditioning.

“It’s always a great time for everyone,” said Post Commander Charlie Johnson. “We have delicious burgers and hot dogs, drinks, and the corn—Berwyn Fruit Market always hooks us up with delicious sweet corn we put on the grill. Our volunteers come together to make this a success every year. For bingo, we get prizes donated from everyone. Winners find their treasurers in what we get donated. It’s a great afternoon of fun.”
“Even our tents get donated,” said Quartermaster Richard Aguinaga. “AEJ Party Rentals came out early to get us all set up.”
Diane Pencak with the post also plays a large role in organizing the picnic each year.
“We’ve been doing this for over 40 years,” she said. “We used to hold it in the forest preserve, but people got tired of carrying the keg out,” she joked.
“Besides the food and treats, kids prizes are donated by Toys For Tots, and we encourage all of the kids to get school supplies that we have for them. We are already looking forward to another great picnic next year.”
