One man was killed and two people remain in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash Sunday night at 99th Street and Harlem Avenue in Chicago Ridge.
Chicago Ridge police said they responded to 911 calls about 10 p.m. on August 31 of a serious traffic crash with injuries at the intersection.
Upon arrival, officers found two heavily damaged vehicles and multiple individuals with severe injuries. The Chicago Ridge Fire Department and Bridgeview Fire Department quickly responded to the scene, providing emergency medical care and transporting all four individuals involved to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment.
A 22-year-old male passenger from one of the vehicles died shortly after the crash. The driver of the same vehicle suffered minor injuries and was expected to recover. The two occupants of the second vehicle remain in critical condition at this time, police said Thursday.
In order to safely manage the scene, Chicago Ridge police shut down the roadway with assistance from the Bridgeview Police Department and Chicago Ridge Emergency Management personnel. The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist with the investigation.
Chicago Ridge police said there have been concerns regarding safety at the intersection of 99th Street and Harlem Avenue. Police said officers are committed to addressing these issues and making Harlem Avenue safer for all drivers.
Since December 2023, the Chicago Ridge Police Department has issued 168 traffic citations directly related to violations at this intersection, with the majority involving disobeying traffic signals and improper U-turns.
