The Meteors started 1-3 last season with a win over Foreman before suspending the program because of low numbers and finishing with three forfeit losses.
Now they’re back and coach Harold Blackmon — in his second season in Bronzeville after a successful stint at St. Laurence — is upbeat.
He noted the current seniors have persevered through considerable adversity. As sophomores, they were on a frosh-soph team that also played just four games.
“Despite these setbacks, they have stayed the course,” Blackmon said, and a top goal is qualifying for the IHSA playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Starters back are running back Zach Woodberry (5-8, 175), linebacker Joshua Thornton (5-6, 165), defensive back/receiver Phillip Seltzer (6-0, 195), defensive back Anwar Watkins (5-7, 155), lineman Elijah Sirleaf (5-7, 230) and receiver/defensive back Amari Brown (5-8, 175). Woodberry, Thornton. Seltzer and Watkins are seniors, Sirleaf is a junior and Brown is a sophomore.
Others expected to play significant roles include junior receiver Chaz McKinney (5-11, 190), sophomore receiver Zaire Bigham (6-2, 170) and sophomore lineman Jayden Ross (6-0, 285).
