Lace up your sneakers, grab your costume, and get ready to run because Moraine Valley Community College is bringing back its popular Halloween 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, starting at 9 a.m. at 9000 College Parkway in Palos Hills.

Now in its 12th year, the Halloween 5K has grown into a beloved fall tradition for runners, walkers, families and Halloween lovers of all ages. Following the main race, kids ages 3 to 12 can join the Kid’s Dash at approximately 10:15 a.m., making the morning full of energy, laughter and excitement.

The event’s longtime organizer and Associate Director of Programs at Moraine Valley, Jana Terborg, said the Halloween 5K holds a large amount of community appeal.

“This is my ninth year as director, and every time, it feels just as special,” Terborg said. “The Halloween 5K offers something for everyone — a beautiful run through our campus, family-friendly activities, and the chance to give back.”

The event first began in 2014 and has evolved into one of Moraine Valley’s most anticipated seasonal celebrations. In addition to the main race and the Kid’s Dash, families can enjoy the Little Pumpkins Patch, a playful space designed to keep children engaged before, during and after the race.

“We added the Little Pumpkins Patch to make this a true family experience,” Terborg explained. “It gives parents the chance to enjoy the 5K while their kids take part in supervised activities, and it adds a fun, festive vibe to the morning.”

The Little Pumpkins Patch is staffed by certified youth programming specialists from Moraine Valley’s Health, Fitness & Recreation Center and sponsored by local community partners. Kids can enjoy games, crafts and seasonal activities while their parents hit the course.

And yes — costumes are highly encouraged for everyone.

Organizers expect between 350 and 400 participants this year, with registration fees benefiting the Moraine Valley Foundation, which provides need-based scholarships to help students afford their education. Through Aug. 31, registration costs $35 for community members and alumni, $25 for MVCC employees and students, and $10 for the Kid’s Dash. Prices increase by $5 starting Sept. 1.

“By participating, every runner is making a real difference,” Terborg said.

Terborg said what makes this 5K unique is its perfect mix of fitness, fun and community spirit.

“The campus route is beautiful in the fall, and between the costumes, the Kid’s Dash and the Little Pumpkins Patch, the energy is incredible,” she said. “It’s not just a race; it’s a morning full of memories.”

Local businesses, sponsors and volunteers play an essential role in making the event possible each year. Opportunities to volunteer or become a sponsor — along with registration details and the full race route map — are available on the Halloween 5K website at https://www.morainevalley.edu/fitrec/programs/halloween5k.
