Monee property owners again will have a chance to recoup some of the taxes paid on their land last year.
In his finance report during the board’s July 23 meeting, Trustee Chuck Rakis said rebates will be available for the fifth year.
“The village is pleased to announce it will continue the property tax rebate program this year,” he said. “Information regarding the property tax rebate program will be posted on the village’s website soon. Applications for the property tax rebate program will be available August 14.”
In previous years, Monee has refunded 50 percent of the property tax paid to the village. Rebates will apply only to the Village of Monee portion of the tax bill. Applications and supporting documents for eligible properties will be required.
To qualify for the tax rebate, the applicant must be the property owner living in a single family, town home, or a residential condominium unit within a building that he or she owns.
The program is not open to renters, even though most residential rental rates have property taxes built in. The rebate program was initiated by Mayor Therese Bogs during her first year in office.
In other business during the meeting, the board:
•Heard a presentation from Sanchez Properties for a development proposed for 6050 Industrial Drive. The project is from Luis Sanchez and his family, and businesses to be located there would be “light industrial” manufacturing. Sanchez already has a successful development in Monee, the Lamels Plaza on Manhattan-Monee Road. Although he named Lamels using the first letter of each of his children’s names, Sanchez’s new development has no name yet, and the property still has to be purchased.
•Heard Trustee Doug Horne report the new Department of Public Works facility is nearing completion. A preliminary walk-through of the building is slated for August 4, he said, and the village is tentatively scheduled to have occupancy by mid-August. A grand opening has yet to be slated. “We’ll worry about that once it’s online,” Horne noted.
•Heard Trustee Heidi Gonzalez report Movies in the Park will continue on “Wednesday, July 30, with “Elf,” for Christmas in July, under the pavilion at dusk. And thank you to Animal Wellness Center of Monee for sponsoring all the movies this summer and to Gina’s Motorsports for sponsoring the popcorn.”
•Heard Trustee Scott Youdris report that among Emergency Management Agency’s assistance this month was a call for a missing person on Shaw Creek Drive. “The officer in charge, Tracey Henson, was sent to meet our police OIC, and quickly sent out a picture of the missing person and related information to the EMA responders. A rapid coordinated search of the area was performed by EMA and the police, and OIC Henson was able to locate the subject in Country Meadows, at a house where he was seeking shelter from the rain. Monee Fire was called to check the subject, who was released back to his family. A huge thank you to OIC Henson for her leadership and coordination and to all the responding police officers and EMA responders who gave a happy ending to this incident.”
•Heard Monee Historical Society President Billy Morgan give an update on events the MHS is sponsoring in coming weeks. He noted the MHS Art Auction and Wine and Cheese Reception will take place on August 9, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Heritage Center. Tickets are $40 each/$75 per couple.
