An ordinance to govern the discharge of a firearm in Monee was approved during the village board of trustees meeting on July 9.
Village Attorney Larry Gryczewski told the board the ordinance was amended “so that Sheepdog would be in compliance.”
Sheepdog Firearms Academy, 25812 S. Sunset Drive, is a full service firearms and accessories store offering self defense and firearms training.
The ordinance notes that “the Village of Monee is experiencing substantial growth throughout its entire corporate limits” and “Illinois residents are permitted to carry handguns, if subject to compliance with licensing requirements.”
Moreover, “village zoning and business ordinances provide for the operation of a properly licensed indoor gun range.”
According to the ordinance, “it is in the best interest of the village to amend the current ordinance addressing the issue of the discharge of a firearm.”
Under the amended ordinance, it is unlawful to discharge a firearm or air gun in the village except by:
- An officer of the law in discharging in the performance of his or her duties
- A citizen who is properly licensed to possess a gun and is defending his or her personal safety
- A citizen who is properly licensed while being a patron/customer of an indoor gun range.
The board unanimously approved the new ordinance, which takes effect immediately.
