Monee welcomed Subway, its newest eatery, with a celebratory ribbon-cutting earlier this month.

Subway is a casual counter-serve chain for build-your-own sandwiches and salads, with some health-conscious options.

Dr. Therese Bogs, Monee mayor, shared the ceremony with shop owner Kenny Patel.

“It’s with great enthusiasm the village welcomes Subway as our newest business,” she said. “Mr. Patel and his family are happy to be here in town, and we wish them much success. Please be sure to support our local Subway!”

Located in Lamel’s Plaza at 5701 West Monee-Manhattan Road, the shop offers all the usual fan favorites, along with some mouth-watering new choices, too.

For instance, there’s a pit-smoked brisket sandwich that’s naturally slow-smoked for at least 13 hours, topped with smoked cheddar cheese, and Subway’s zesty barbecue sauce.

The chicken pesto ciabatta, with fresh mozzarella, marries savory rotisserie-style chicken with fresh mozzarella on crisp-crust bread with a soft, airy interior. It’s topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and finished with Subway’s new basil pesto sauce.

The standard favorites are there, too, along with plenty of choices to make a sandwich like no other. Options include 9-grain wheat bread, Italian herbs and cheese bread, plus multi-grain flatbread.

Cheese comes in varieties, as well, including smoked cheddar, American and provolone.

Extra cheese is available, along with bacon and pepperoni.

For toppings, choices are jalapeno peppers, baby spinach, black olives, cucumbers, or green peppers, along with ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, Caesar dressing, southwest, and grated parmesan cheese.

Monee Economic Development Director Bill Barnes said during the July 9 village board meeting that the new shop is getting an enthusiastic response.

“The grand opening of Subway in Lamel’s Plaza happened, and they had a great turnout,” he said, “and I think a lot of our employees are visiting it. I know I was there today and so was Michelle (Powell, village clerk), and so they’re very grateful.

“I saw Kenny Patel today, and he said he was very grateful they had a great turnout.

“So they’re very excited,” he added. “Things are running smoothly.”

Subway joins Starbucks (5828 W. Monee-Manhattan Road) and Dollar Tree (5828 W. Monee-Manhattan) as Monee’s growing list of new businesses.

Subway’s regular hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
