Mohammed Jaber, 42, was sworn in Monday as the newest member of the Orland Fire Protection District Board of Fire Commissioners, filling a vacancy on the three-member board.

The Commission is responsible for reviewing and recommending matters related to the hiring of firefighters and administering firefighter testing, among other duties.

Jaber was joined at the ceremony by his wife, Nuha Hasan, and their two children, Sarah and Zakariyeh. Also in attendance were Commissioners Matt Rafferty and Brian O’Neill, Trustee DJ Jeffers, and Interim Fire Chief John Purtill.

“We are very happy to welcome Mohammed to our board and look forward to working with him,” said Commission Chairman Rafferty.

Jeffers, who previously served on the Commission and now serves as secretary of the district’s Board of Trustees, administered the Oath of Office.

“We are really proud to have Commissioner Jaber here and we look forward to working with him,” Jeffers said after the ceremony.

“I am so proud to be here to support the Orland Fire Protection District,” Jaber said. “It is the best in the nation, and it will be even better with the support of the board, commissioners, administration and our great firefighters.”

Jaber thanked the Board of Trustees for his appointment, offering special thanks to Jeffers, Board President Beth Damas Kaspar and Bridget Eileen Tolan.

During Monday’s meeting, the Commission also voted to approve firefighter testing for this fall.
