In a move that some members of the community thought was pointless, the Orland Park Village Board voted 6-1 Monday night to adopt a civility resolution that had gone through a few revisions and there were five versions to choose from.

The “Milani Version 2” ordinance, crafted by Trustee Michael Milani, basically says the board will try to be civil and respectful to the residents to the best of their ability. The ordinance will be displayed in a prominent spot in Village Hall.

Trustee Cynthia Nelson Katsenes voted “no.” She said it was still against the board members’ right to freedom of speech.

During the Committee of the Whole meeting, one citizen said there was disrespect shown by former Mayor Keith Pekau to some residents.

“The voters have spoken what they think about civility and the way public officials should act,” he said. “To me, bringing up this resolution at this time…I just think it’s adding some politics that aren’t really necessary.”

At the regular village board meeting another citizen added “I am sure this is not worth the time spent drafting and discussing it.”
