The Village of Manteno’s Legacy Park is expanding two-thirds of its masterplan, finishing up the fishing pond and adding a handicap accessible dock. No fishing permits are required for the village, but they are required for people over the age of 18 by the state. The fishing pond and pier should be completed by the beginning of June.

The Village of Manteno and Manteno Township purchased the property in 2008, totaling 66 acres. The property’s master plan was designed by Hitchcock Design Group, who helped with two open land space land acquisition and development grants of $400,000 each, for two phases. The village/township agreement, to split the cost 50/50, included all except the ice/skate rink that is funded by the village 100 percent.

The park includes a playground, tennis courts, disc golf, and a splash pad, among other amenities. The playground has slides, swings, and enough entertainment to keep kids having fun for hours. There is a skate rink open yearly for skating and hockey,

The splash pad hours are 10 a.m. through 8 p.m., from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The ice rink is open until midnight for skaters, when the weather permits in the winter. During the summer, the rink could be used for rollerblading and skating.

Park facilities are available to rent out if residents go online at the Village’s website. There a park event application can be submitted.
