At Wentworth Park, the barks outnumbered the cheers.
On Saturday, May 31, dozens of wagging tails and costumed critters strutted their stuff at the annual Midway Pet Parade — a community celebration packed with treats, tail wags and a whole lot of heart.
The event kicked off at the park on 56th Street and Narragansett Avenue. Pet owners checked in early to register their animals and collect “Pet Parade Passports,” stamp cards that doubled as entries in a community raffle.
The parade was hosted by the Midway Chamber of Commerce and featured a mix of local vendors, food trucks, and free pet vaccinations provided by Partners for Prevention. Volunteers handed out passports at the chamber’s table, while families visited booths for stamps, samples, and giveaways.
Dogs in costume stole much of the spotlight, but they weren’t the only stars. A rabbit in a stroller, a pair of parakeets, and even a sunglasses-wearing lizard made appearances during the walk through the park.
Pets weren’t just there to show off — many received free vaccinations on-site. Organizers said animals received core health services, helping ease the burden on pet owners facing rising veterinary costs.
Throughout the morning, children blew bubbles near food trucks and neighbors gathered to cheer on the parade. Informal awards were given for best costume, best trick, and other crowd favorites.
The Midway Chamber called the event a success and said it plans to bring the Pet Parade back next year.
