Palos Heights aldermen decided this week to enact a 1 percent local grocery tax to replace the state’s grocery tax.

Finance Chair Alderman Michael McGrogan moved at Tuesday’s city council meeting to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance creating the local grocery tax.

He said the measure was necessary because Gov. JB Pritzker persuaded the General Assembly to eliminate the state grocery tax as of January 1, 2026. The law allowed local municipalities to impose their own version.

“It’s probably an electioneering type of thing,” he said. “So, this will basically reinstate what residents were already paying. It’s just a matter of what entity is taking responsibility. And now, we get to be the bearers of bad news.” The motion passed.
