Illinois Wesleyan’s Timothy McHugh went back-to-back.
The Mount Carmel graduate and Orland Park resident has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the weeks ending March 25 and April 1.
This marks the first two times in his career he has achieved this recognition.
On March 22, McHugh helped the Titans to an 18-15 comeback win over host Calvin. He finished with five goals and nine points — both career-highs — to go along with four assists. McHugh also added three ground balls as IWU overcame a five-goal deficit.
The sophomore attack then earned his second consecutive Offensive Player of the Week as he provided four goals and four assists in a 23-18 victory over visiting Adrian on March 29. McHugh was one goal, one assist and one point short of his career highs in each category. McHugh also chipped in four ground balls and one caused turnover.
“Timmy has had a great year so far,” IWU coach Zach Iannucci said. “Currently, he is one of the top players in the country for assists per game, but he is also developing in every area of his game — from being a dodger, scorer and obviously a feeder. He has a great feel for the game and is willing to put his body on the line to make plays.
“What does not show up in the scorebook is the toughness he plays with. He is always in the mix for ground balls, works hard on the ride, and consistently finishes games with one of the dirtiest uniforms on the team. That speaks to his competitiveness and desire to win. Timmy has incredible ability and even more potential in him. We have pushed him hard, and he continues to respond and rise to the challenges put in front of him.”
● Augustana’s Nathan Melby was named the CCIW Pitcher of the Week for March 3 in baseball. The senior right-hander picked up the win in relief as the Vikings defeated Northland 11-6 in a neutral-site game played in Rantoul.
The Lyons graduate worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings, struck out five, allowed two hits and walked none.
● Aurora’s Joevonn McCottry was named to the All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Second Team in men’s basketball for the 2024-25 season.
The 6-foot-3 junior guard averaged 16.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as the Spartans finished 11-15 overall and 9-9 in the NACC. The Riverside-Brookfield graduate added 3.4 assists per game and shot 44.2 percent from the field.
