After a fire on Feb. 22 at the Candlewood apartment complex in Justice displaced dozens of families local school districts and the Justice Park District jumped into action.
Indian Springs School District 109 and Argo Community High School District 217 quickly stepped in to help affected families. The Justice Park District also mobilized efforts to provide assistance.
The park district issued a request for donations, and Board of Commissioners President Carrie Bernardoni said the community’s response has been overwhelming.
“We have so many donations that we’ve had to turn people away,” Bernardoni said. “Everything from clothing to shampoo, household items, diapers, laundry soap, etc. The staff has been working to sort, organize and connect with the families to make sure they have everything they need.”
The park district expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
“The Justice Park District is honored to witness the incredible generosity of our community as we come together to support the victims of this devastating fire,” Bernardoni said. “It has been truly touching to see neighbors helping neighbors, proving that even in the face of hardship, unity and compassion prevail. This kind of selflessness is just what we need in today’s world.”
Board Treasurer Tabatha Sutera shared a personal connection to the tragedy.
“To be honest, experiencing a tragedy myself with the tornado in July and losing what my family and I have worked so hard for was an eye-opening experience for me,” Sutera said. “Three seconds, and it was gone. When I heard of the fire, my first thought was, ‘They just lost everything.’ I just wanted to do something. The support from our community members, as well as other communities, has been incredibly heartwarming and emotional. Since the first post on social media, people have stepped up—everyday people, churches, Toys for Tots and food pantries have donated essential items, pillows, blankets and clothing. I can only hope this brings some comfort and empowers these victims to overcome their loss.”
Due to limited space, the park district has created a list of items still needed, including:
- New men’s, women’s and girls’ underwear (all sizes)
- Cat and dog beds
- Pet collars
- Paper towels and toilet paper
- 52DD bras
- Women’s size 7.5 slip-on shoes
- Lock boxes
- Pill containers
- Laundry detergent and dish soap
- Towels
