Peotone American Legion Auxiliary Unit 392 is marking its 100th year, and it’s an age they don’t mind telling.
Chartered on September 11, 1924, the group is as strong as ever and continues to contribute in many ways to the community and local military veterans.
A special exhibit now on display at the Peotone Library highlights some of the auxiliary’s achievements during the century of its existence.
The exhibit was designed by auxiliary members Rosemary Wilson and Linda Madonich, at the request of Ann Marie Manning Nagel, PALA President.
“Some of the articles in the exhibit were collected over the years and some donated by a few auxiliary members,” Wilson said.
“The oldest item in the exhibit is a picture of the second auxiliary president, Mary Cherry, which was taken possibly 75-80 years ago. There is also a complete list of all the auxiliary presidents who have served during the past 100 years.
“There is a newspaper article and picture from 1958 of a dinner honoring past presidents. There also are articles of the different events and fundraisers the auxiliary has initiated, past and present, plus many more items of interest,” she added.
The exhibit is currently on display at the Peotone Public Library until the end of February.
“I had hoped to put as many items as possible on display,” Ann Marie Nagel said. “We had a hat worn back in the 1940s by our members. We displayed the many accomplishments achieved during the past 100 years. We still have a few ladies who were past presidents during the ‘50s and ‘60s, and who are still among our ranks today – Shirley Hall and Dolores Henshaw.
“We have had exceptional responses to our poppy donations, as well. We tried to include as many items as we were able to find and display.”
Nagel noted the group is planning a dance to take place later in the year.
“The actual date of the 100th anniversary is September 11, 2025. Our members are trying to put a social dance together, to take place in September, and we’re hoping we have a good turnout for that.”
Additionally, she said, “We currently are collecting plastic bags in hopes we can drop off 1,000 pounds to the receptacles at various stores. In exchange, we can get a plastic bench that will house a plaque marking the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 392.
“I am very proud we are able to keep the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 392 still going and gaining ground. We recently added a junior division to our organization and currently have six members with another five to join.
“We have raised funds to support the servicemen and women, veterans, and community causes throughout the year, and brought laughter to the Manteno Veterans home by bringing BINGO to the veterans and supplied them with a meal they love, as well.
“We have delivered boxes of goodies to homebound veterans and members of our community, whether they are in a nursing home or within Peotone and its surrounding communities.
“We have contributed to the different charities within our community and also support our Post’s endeavors, as much as possible.
“We always are looking for new members to join either our junior or our adult divisions,” Nagel continued.
“Any questions about joining our organization, call or email me at nagel5963@gmail.com or call 708-565-0017.”
In addition to President Ann Marie Nagel, other officers in the Peotone Auxiliary are Vice President Leslie Joslin, Secretary Elizabeth Ann Hetzer, Treasurer Paula Prium, Chaplain Carrie Wick, and Sergeant-at-Arms Jane Jones.

Great article. Thankyou for printing this in honor of the Peotone American Legion Auxiliary Unit 392. We appreciate the recognition.
