Oak Lawn Community High School senior Nathan Radloff has achieved global recognition, securing second place worldwide in Vocabulary.com’s prestigious Vocabulary Bowl.
“This accomplishment is not merely a numerical ranking; it signifies perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the enhancement of our linguistic prowess,” Radloff, of Oak Lawn, said. “Each word we acquire enriches our communication, enabling us to articulate our thoughts with precision and clarity. Let us continue to embrace the challenge of expanding our vocabulary, for in doing so, we unlock new avenues of expression and understanding.”
Radloff also earned the distinction of being the top public school participant globally, an accolade that reflects his extraordinary dedication to mastering words, according to his teachers at Oak lawn Community High School (OLCHS).
His performance led OLCHS, 9400 SW Hwy, Oak Lawn, to its third Vocabulary Bowl championship, a feat that underscores the team’s consistency and excellence.
The Spartans earned their first title in fall 2023, followed by another in spring 2024, before claiming the top spot once again in fall 2024.
The Vocabulary Bowl, hosted annually by Vocabulary.com, challenges students to master vocabulary lists tied to classroom literature and supplemental practice sets. This year, more than 351,000 students from middle and high schools worldwide participated.
OLCHS emerged as the top high school in Illinois, regardless of overall division, ranking 10th nationally among high schools and 14th globally, an accomplishment that also highlighted its phenomenal educators, including English teacher Bill Gerny, who placed fourth globally as a Top Rookie Teacher with 14,661 words mastered by his students, emphasized the benefits of the competition.
“It’s (the Vocabulary Bowl) a way for students to work toward a common goal and to accomplish something for their school in which they can take pride,” he said.
Veteran English teacher at the high school, Amy Perras, who placed 23rd globally, highlighted the creativity that vocabulary unlocks.
“Winning the Vocabulary.com tournament is a testament to the power of words – not just as tools of communication, but as sparks of creativity,” Perras said. “Vocabulary isn’t confined to the left brain; it’s where logic meets imagination, and where we craft stories, ideas, and innovation. This victory shows how language empowers us to think bigger and express ourselves more vividly.”
The friendly, educational competition is seamlessly integrated into OLCHS’s curriculum. Students practice vocabulary tied to their English coursework, blending academic rigor with the excitement of global competition.
Nathan Radloff’s stellar performance, coupled with the dedicated efforts of his teammates and teachers, exemplifies OLCHS’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and linguistic mastery
