Amal Centers Sr., born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1957, passed away at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis. Diagnosed only a few months ago, Amal faced his illness with the strength and grace that defined his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Judy; his beloved son, Amal Jr. (Karin); and his siblings, Ouida, Gladys, and Billy. Amal also leaves behind countless friends and mentees whose lives he touched deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Frankie Mae Centers of Hazard, Kentucky.
Amal’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to family, community, and service. For over 40 years, he was a cornerstone of the Scouting program in the Chicago area, serving as a Troop Scoutmaster, Assistant District Commissioner, and mentor to more than 75 Eagle Scouts. He became a father figure to many young people and was a guiding presence in their lives.
A devoted member of his local Catholic Church, Amal was active in the Men’s Club, where he served multiple terms as President, and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Professionally, he spent over 38 years as a respected truck driver and Union Steward with Teamsters Local 710. Amal also served his country honorably as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army and was a dedicated member of American Legion Post #735 in Chicago.
Amal’s legacy is one of service, love, and leadership. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Foran Funeral Home, 7300 W. Archer Ave., Summit, IL.
