The Palos Hills City Council voted Dec. 5 to ban short-term rentals in all residential zoning districts, amending the municipal code. The ordinance, introduced by Alderman Peter Donahue, aims to protect the safety and character of local neighborhoods.

The new rules prohibit renting residential properties for fewer than 30 consecutive days, targeting practices common to platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo. Exceptions are permitted for home occupations already allowed under city code. Council members emphasized that short-term rentals could destabilize neighborhoods, disrupt peace, and lead to poor property maintenance. One official noted the measure ensures properties “remain well-maintained and family-oriented.”

Mayor Gerald Bennett acknowledged enforcement challenges due to the city’s non-home-rule status. To address violations, the city plans to issue fines and collaborate with rental platforms to remove non-compliant listings.

In other updates, Alderman Marty Kleefisch presented the annual public safety report from Police Chief Jeff Cucio. Palos Hills recorded no homicides, rapes, or robberies in 2024, though there were two aggravated assaults and one burglary. Officers issued 271 traffic citations and 198 parking tickets during the year. Council members praised the police department for its proactive efforts and partnerships with local schools, which have bolstered community trust and safety.\

Economic development also featured prominently. A barbecue restaurant and an ice cream shop are nearing their openings, while a new hair salon has submitted plans for city approval. Officials highlighted these additions as signs of steady commercial growth, with a shopping plaza nearly fully occupied. Mayor Bennett expressed optimism about the city’s economic outlook and encouraged residents to stay updated on new businesses and winter activities via the Palos Hills Economic Development Facebook page.

Alderman Mark Brachman commended city staff for their holiday decorations, mentioning positive feedback from residents and his wife. Alderman Donna O’Connell invited families to the Donuts with Santa event hosted by the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Moscow Center.

Council members concluded by thanking city staff and residents for their contributions throughout the year, underscoring the importance of community involvement in keeping Palos Hills safe and thriving.

The Palos Hills City Council will reconvene at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Civic Center.
