Here are programs and events featured at the Kankakee Public Library, 201 E. Merchant Street, for December.

Lawyers in the Library: In partnership with Prairie State Legal Services, the library invites the community to meet with a lawyer for free, on the second Thursday of every month, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, in the third-floor suite. This month’s event will be held on December 12.

Representatives from Prairie State will offer free, one-on-one meetings with an attorney to give legal advice. All participants must complete a screening process before speaking with an attorney about civil legal matters.

Bingo, Books, and BP: Join us on Friday, December 13, from 10 a.m. – noon, for Bingo, Books, and BP, in the third-floor meeting room at the library. Every month, attendees have chances to socialize and win prizes, including books! Light refreshments are provided. Concurrent with Bingo, Deb Caise, an RN from St. Mary’s, will be available to provide simple health checks, including blood pressure readings, as well as answer basic medical questions and provide referrals to various community resources. This monthly program is free!

Veterans’ Assistance Available: In partnership with the Hines VAMC, the library is pleased to announce free, walk-in consultations with a VA representative on the third Tuesday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the third-floor suite. December’s event is scheduled on Tuesday, December 17.

Each month, one-on-one meetings will be available to get assistance with questions regarding veterans’ concerns, including medical care and housing, as well as presentations on various VA departments and assistance processing applications.

Soul Collections Book Discussion: Join the library for its monthly book group, Soul Collections, a program that highlights Black authors and themes. The next meeting is on Thursday, December 19, at 5:30 p.m. The book chosen for discussion is “A Different Kind of Christmas,” by Alex Haley.

From the bestselling author of “Roots,” Haley’s “A Different Kind of Christmas” tells the story of a young Southerner who becomes an agent for the Underground Railroad and helps mastermind the escape of slaves from his father’s plantation on Christmas Eve. Join us for this monthly discussion. This event is free and open to the public.

Library Holiday Closings: The library will be closed on Tuesday, December 24, for Christmas Eve, and Wednesday, December 25, for Christmas Day. The library will resume normal business hours on Thursday, December 26, at 9 a.m.

The library also will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, for New Year’s Eve and remain closed through Wednesday, January 1, for New Year’s Day.
