Monee’s upcoming municipal election will see contests in two of the three races. Aspiring candidates filed their nominating petitions last week, with two seeking the mayor’s post, four vying for three trusteeships, and one for village clerk.
As rumored for months, current Village Clerk Doneshia Codjoe will challenge Dr. Therese Bogs for the mayor’s position, while incumbent Trustees Doug Horne, Charles (Chuck) Rakis, John Henson, along with newcomer Sharon Golden, will seek the three terms that will be open.
Deputy Clerk Michelle Powell-Johnson alone filed a petition for village clerk.
Codjoe said later she does not view her candidacy for mayor as a challenge to Bogs.
“Me turning in my candidate petition for mayor wasn’t as a challenge for Mayor Bogs but rather a continuing journey of my heart for our community on a different capacity,” she said.
“In the now more than 15 years living in Monee, this has been home for my family. With 7-1/2 years serving in the capacity as village clerk, much has been accomplished, and I’ve kept my promises.
“My family and I have always helped the community, long before becoming village clerk, and I’ve even brought many youth from my church to Monee, assisting with events and serving our community, also. My heart for the people and home inspired me to run.
“I hope to achieve greater unity,” she said, emphasizing unity, “communication, transparency, more cohesiveness, more community input, compliancy, beautification of what we currently have, and continue the growth of our village for the generations to come.” 
Mayor Bogs, meanwhile, said she is “confident in our track record of success,” and welcomes the “test” of her leadership.
“The incredible momentum and positive transformation of our village during the past four years has inspired me to seek a second term,” she said. 
“I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made together, from strengthening public safety to enhancing our community amenities. Monee has experienced a period of growth and prosperity that is truly remarkable.
One of my proudest accomplishments is building a strong and dedicated team,” she continued. “Together with our board of trustees, we’ve achieved significant milestones:
  • Enhanced Public Safety: We’ve established a fully staffed police department, ensuring the safety and security of our residents.
  • Improved Infrastructure: We’ve invested in critical infrastructure projects, including sidewalks, parks, and roads, to improve the quality of life for all.
  • Economic Development: We’ve attracted new businesses, such as Tractor Supply, Starbucks, and Dollar Tree, creating jobs and boosting our local economy.
  • Preserving Our History: We’ve supported the Monee Historical Society to preserve our community’s rich heritage for future generations.
“Building upon our successes, I’m committed to:
  • Continuing Infrastructure Improvements: We will prioritize the maintenance and upgrade of our infrastructure to ensure a resilient and sustainable community.
  • Promoting Economic Growth: We will attract new businesses and industries to create jobs and stimulate our local economy.
  • Enhancing Public Safety: We will continue to invest in our police department to keep our community safe.
  • Strengthening Community Engagement: We will foster a sense of community by organizing events and initiatives that bring residents together.”
Dr. Bogs said she believes the election will underscore her “track record of success and commitment” to Monee.
“I do believe that every strong leader should go through times of testing,” she said. 
“It is part of growth and maturity. During this present administration during the past 3.5 years, I realize I have come a long way. I view this particular challenge as an opportunity to highlight the significant progress we’ve made, showcase the phenomenal team of leadership we have worked hard to pull together,  and to share our bright vision for the future of Monee. I’m confident our track record of success and our commitment to serving the community will resonate with voters.
“I encourage all residents to stay informed, engage in the electoral process, and vote for the candidate who best represents their interests and values. Let’s continue to build a brighter future for Monee together.”
Voting in the 2025 municipal election will take place on April 1.
